With unique natural attractions, quiet beaches, coves and the best jerk cuisine in Jamaica, Port Antonio is perfect for nature lovers or those in search of tranquility.

Port Antonio, in the parish of Portland and on the Northeastern coast of Jamaica, is known as "The Other Side of Jamaica." The other, splendid, lush and captivating side - nestled between the Blue Mountains and the Caribbean sea. Thanks to a completely renovated highway, Portland is now more accessible than ever from the westernmost parts of the island. With activities ranging from sunbathing on some of the most pristine and seldom crowded beaches to gorgeous waterfalls, swimming in the famous Blue Lagoon, surfing on Boston Beach or sampling authentic "jerk" cuisine at Boston Bay, Port Antonio is growing in popularity. It's the perfect spot for for those looking for a quiet and secluded Jamaican getaway, away from the more more nightlife-oriented and populated Montego Bay or Negril.

Getting There from Montego Bay or Negril

From Montego Bay or Negril, getting to Port Antonio is now much easier than it used to be. A completed North Coast Highway allows for smooth road trips along the north coast of the island to the east. It's also a wonderful way to experience several other sights and towns such as Discovery Bay, Runaway Bay and Ocho Rios for instance. If timed right, one could even stop at the famous Dunns River Falls before continuing on to Port Antonio.

Folks should hire a private driver, as this is usually the safest way to go. Recommended services are Explorer Jamaica Tours (ask for Denzil), or Clive's Transport Service. Both offer safe, comfortable and informative rides to your destination and will even stop along the way for anything needed, whether photos or food.

Although it is known to rain more in Port Antonio, it never lasts for more than an hour at a time.

Top 5 Things To Do and See

Whether on a day trip or for a longer stay, Port Antonio offers plenty to do and see, particulary for nature lovers.

  • Frenchman's Cove and Beach: For just a small US $2 entrance fee, one gets to enjoy this secluded natural attraction, one of the most frequently photographed for use in Jamaica tourism ads. A long beautiful stream awaits those who want to languish away from the waves and swim in the quiet cool waters. Just a few steps away after the stream ends is the beach itself, one of the most beautiful and private on this side of the island, surrounded by vegetation and cliffs. On site is also a restaurant serving Jamaican food.

  • San San Beach: Close to Frenchman's Cove, San San is another stunning beach, with more shallow waters good for snorkeling. Long Bay Beach, while not recommended for swimming because of a strong undertow, is a beautiful sight that is worth taking in.

  • Jerk Chicken at Boston Bay: Portland is known as the birthplace of jerk cuisine. In Boston Bay is the Boston Jerk Stand, where rows of outdoor grlls and eateries are lined up, ready for visitors to sample authentic Jamaican jerk chicken, jerk pork or anything jerk! They say one has not had real jerk until one has had it here. A must-do. Boston Bay Beach is also a short drive from the jerk stands - and is the only place in Jamaica where folks can surf, because of the high tides.

  • The Blue Lagoon is a beautiful private cove where one can swim as well as take a ride on a raft. The water, a splendid turquoise and deep green, is cool and perfect for those hot afternoons. Many choose to just take in the scenery and eat on site at the Blue Lagoon Restaurant. Check with the hotel or tour company before heading out.

  • Reich Falls: Reich Falls is unique and one of the most stunning waterfalls on the island. It's a series of cascades falling over limestone rocks and into pools good for swimming or diving. One should check the weather before heading to Reich Falls, as the attraction will close if rains are heavy. On good days, folks can hike up along the falls and go through a cave with a whirlpool in the middle of it.

The uniqueness of Jamaica is that each side of the island offers a completely different experience, scenery and culture for its visitor. Many Jamaicans claim Port Antonio to be the most beautiful part of their island. The best way to find out is to explore!
